Dangling thousands of feet above the mountainous
terrain hangs a creature. Dangling by his fingertips Geoff Mackay
reaches for a bolt, finds his oldest piece of protection, reaches
up and secures it to the cliff. Slowly letting his weight onto the
new secure-point he tests it but not slow enough, Mackay's forearm
is tired from the climb and the bolt isn't as sure as he thought.
A piece of rock breaks loose and gravity pulls quicker than he can
react.
Falling, Geoff swings his feet toward the
cliff, then the slack is removed from the rope and he swings toward
the cliff. Miraculously both feet plant on the side of this rock-wall
and Geoff Mackay looks up, probably 40 feet from where he was, and
then he looks down at a closely avoided fate. "Time to replace
a few bolts with some cams", he mutters, then takes a deep
breath and starts climbing again. This wasn't the first fall and
he knows it defiantly won't be the last.
